POWER
Electricity is a convenience afforded to many folks on earth. Some folks could live without it, some it's an actual necessity. Think of someone that requires some medical treatment or procedure to stay alive that requires power of some kind. Unless you're already on the "I don't have power" end of the spectrum, there are probably some things you can do to prepare for not having power. What would cause you to be without power?
Hurricanes
Torandos
Lightning events
Snow
Ice
Blackouts/brownouts
Incidents/accidents
Governmental Actions
Delinquency
War
Maintenance
Some of these are certainly easier to plan for than others. I guess the first question I'd ask is how long do I want to be prepared for without power? Maybe you live somewhere that has a very stable grid, with redundant feeds and experience very few/short outages. Or maybe you're in an area with regular outages lasting multiple days.
Some Questions:
How long do you want to be prepared for?
What is available for power sources?
Do you have those sources tied into your house?
Do you desire to have whole house backup power?
Types of available power sources:
The good news is there are many ways to generate electrical power. Surely the king of methods is a generator that runs on a liquid/gaseous fuel. But there are many other ways.
Windmills
Water Power
Biomass
Battery Backup
Solar
